Kimberly-Ann "Kimmy" Schmidt is the titular protagonist in Netflix's original series, Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt. She is portrayed by Ellie Kemper.

She is one of 4 mole women, who were kidnapped and kept underground in a religious "doomsday" cult for 15 years. She is fun-loving and curious, albeit clueless about pop culture and modern society. Through her own spunk and determination she learns how to survive in modern day New York, and come to terms with Reverend Richard Wayne Gary Wayne's abuse.

Background[]

Kimmy grew up in Durnsville, Indiana. When she was in the 8th grade, she ran away from home because of a mini skirt argument with her mother, and was then abducted by Reverend Richard Wayne Gary Wayne, who abducted 3 other girls and kept them captive in an underground bunker. He told them all that there was a nuclear apocalypse and that they were the only ones left alive. Kimmy stayed positive during this experience and never truly believed that everyone else was dead. The bunker was eventually found after 15 years by an FBI psychic pig (according to Randy), and Kimmy and the other 3 women were let out.

Season 1[]

"Kimmy Goes Outside!"[]

Kimmy, Cyndee, Gretchen and Donna Maria are decorating inside the bunker for Christmas, and Kimmy reminds the others not to spoil the surprise of who they have for secret Santa, and the four of them sing a few lines of 'Oh Christmas Tree' with the lyrics altered to be about the apocalpyse. The hatch on the bunker opens, interrupting them, and the four of them are freed from the bunker. After appearing on the Today show with the other mole women, she impulsively decides to stay in New York to start a new life, and Cyndee gives her some of her share of the "mole fund money", as well as a wrapped gift, revealing that she was going to be Kimmy's secret Santa. Kimmy is then engages in a series of silly childlike behaviors now that she is taking care of herself independently for the first time: eating candy for dinner in a huge candy store, going "Whee!" while riding the subway, buying light-up sneakers, playing on a playground, etc.. At one point, Kimmy spots Buckley stealing a candy bar from a newsstand and calls him out on it, but he runs off, shouting "stranger danger", to which Kimmy takes offence. Kimmy finds an 'roommate wanted' advertisement in the newspaper and visits Lillian, the landlady, to try to move in, but she is rejected by Titus because she does not have a job, and is told to come back when she is employed. Kimmy attempts to get a job at the candy store she visited earlier, but spots Buckley stealing again. She escorts him home to the Vorhees household and meets Jacqueline, who hires her to help her with various jobs, primarily looking after Buckley. Titus then allows her to move in with him, brushing off the fact that he finds her strange when he hears that she's from Indiana. He stores some of her mole fund money which she gave him to cover the rent he owes Lillian in the freezer before they go to a club together to celebrate her moving in.

At the club, a man flirts with Kimmy, which she is very excited about, but when they're about to kiss her backpack, containing all of her money ($13,000), is stolen from around her ankle (where she'd put it to seem less 'weird') and emptied. She is left with just two books, a little food, and Cyndee's secret Santa gift. Because of the theft, Kimmy is late to her first day working for Jacqueline and is fired. She goes back to the apartment and freaks out over her situation, telling Titus that the Reverend had been right about her. She then explains that she is one of the Indiana Mole Women, and Titus tells her she should leave New York, because escaping is not the same thing as making it. He gives her her rent money from the freezer and tells her to use it on a bus ticket out of the city. Kimmy almost boards the bus, but is distracted at the station due to milk leaking in the plastic bag she's now carrying all of her things in. She starts pulling out the soiled items in the bag, and takes out Cyndee's secret Santa gift, which she opens to reveal a hopelessly inaccurate cross-stitch world map with the word "Someday!" stitched at the bottom. She balls up the map and throws it in the trash can she's by, but sees a rat in it, causing her to think of a time in the bunker when she found a live rat in the air filter, even though the Reverend said everything outside was dead, reminding her that she never gave up while she was there. Kimmy grabs the map and finds Titus working in Time Square, where she tells him to sing, as that's why he came to New York. However, as Titus and Kimmy sing 'The Circle of Life' together, the surrounding traffic noise drowns them out.

"Kimmy Gets a Job!"[]

Kimmy is rehired by Jacqueline after her obvious desperation causes Jacqueline to feel sympathy for her. She is told to throw a superhero-themed birthday party for Buckley, and meets Xanthippe when Kimmy has to help her friend Amelia throw up after getting alcohol poisoning from a drinking game. Kimmy put together a children's party, which Jacqueline disapproves of as the party needed to be elegant and grand enough to be worth Julian coming back from London. Kimmy then tries, with Jacqueline's approval, to ground Xanthippe for leaving during the party, but Xanthippe ignores her. During Buckley's party, Kimmy overhears Xanthippe talking with her friends about their respective love lives, which Kimmy makes shocked faces in reaction to. Immediately following this, Julian texts Jacqueline to say that he will not be returning home for the party, so Jacqueline dismisses everyone and tells Buckley not to open his gifts until Julian does return. She tells Kimmy that she never should have trusted her, grabs a handful of cake, and retreats to her bedroom.

Kimmy goes home and tells Titus that she can no longer work for the Vorheeses, and describes the state of the family to him. She is told by Titus that her working for Jacqueline was a mistake, because she can't do anything help them, citing the fact that she has only read 2 books in the last 15 years. However, this gives her an idea on how she actually can help the Vorheeses, so she returns to the house with Titus, using his robot suit costume to allow Buckley to beat up "Iron Man" with golf clubs and a baseball bat. Kimmy then tells Xanthippe that she knows where she got the story she'd told earlier to her friends: a book intended for middle schoolers called "Babysitter's Club #12: The Mystery of the Surfer Ghost." Xanthippe admits defeat and goes to her rooms while Kimmy visits Jacqueline to tell her what she has done for the children. She teaches a despairing Jacqueline to "take it ten seconds at a time" to get through the difficult moments, which she had learned to do in the bunker. Jacqueline re-hires her, and asks Kimmy to spoon her.

"Kimmy Goes on a Date!"[]

Titus tells Kimmy to talk to someone about her past after she tries to choke him in his sleep due to a "dream date" turning into a nightmare about the bunker. He tells her she is repressing things, but she doesn't want people looking at her like she's a freak, and so she doesn't want to talk to anybody. At the Voorhees's, Jacqueline asks for Kimmy's cellphone number, but when Kimmy says she doesn't have one, Jacqueline gives her one of her old ones. Xan finds it strange that Kimmy does not have a phone, but Kimmy lies that a monkey at the zoo took it and wouldn't give it back. Xanthippe, wanting figure out why Kimmy is so strange, suggests that Charles, Buckley's tutor, who is doing a family tree project for Buckley's school, help them do Kimmy's family tree. While she tries to avoid this initially, Charles asks her to because he doesn't know much about her, so she lies that her last name is Smith, and that she's from Middletown, Ohio, which turns out to be a real place. When Jacqueline heads to a therapy session, Kimmy mentions wanting someone to talk to, meaning about her past, but Jacqueline misunderstands her and instead sets her up on a date with Grant Beldon, a wealthy bachelor.

Kimmy spends a while trying to figure out how to prepare for a date, as she's never worn makeup before, and remarks that in the bunker, she had been content to talk just to herself. Arriving at the restaurant, Kimmy finds that Grant Beldon is quite elderly and utterly senile; he doesn't seem to understand or remember almost anything she says to him, and speaks nonsensically. He even puts food on the floor for a dog that isn't there. Kimmy realizes she can say anything to him about the bunker and because he won't remember it, he won't think her a freak. The two share a strange 'conversation' over their meal, and plan on having a "dinner" date at 3pm. When she tells Jacqueline about the second date scheduled, Charles remarks that not everyone is cute enough to be set up by Jacqueline, and Kimmy becomes flustered at him calling her cute. At the date, Kimmy realizes it's not enough to just talk to someone, but she needs someone to talk with about the bunker and how it's affected her. Hearing the word "bunker" triggers Beldon back to his wartime days, and he comes to think Kimmy is a German spy (posing as a French prostitute) because of her surname, Schmidt. He chases her out of the restaurant and down the street - at a distance, because he is not able to keep up with her. Jacqueline encounters her while Beldon is following her and the two lead him back to his building so he will be safe. Jacqueline apologies for setting her up with Beldon, and Kimmy says that she shouldn't have expected anyone in New York to understand what she's been through - which she covers by saying, "Ohio."

Once home, Xan confronts them both, saying that as Kimmy has no internet presence, they shouldn't trust her. Jacqueline stands up for Kimmy, saying her past doesn't matter and that women have secrets. Then she sends Xan up to her "rooms". Kimmy shares a sweet moment with Charles, who says he enjoyed Buckley's lacrosse (since Buckley kept getting nailed by the ball), and he offers to go with her the next day.

"Kimmy Is... Little Girl, Big City!"[]

Zach tells Kimmy she has to fire an employee named Kabir, but she struggles to think of a way to do it without embarrassing him or making him feel bad. She decides to try to cover up the bad news with nice things that he will like, so she calls him into her office. In her attempts to help him relax, she unintentionally talks to him in a way that he interprets as sexual, massaging his shoulders and telling him she "likes" him. After she drops her pants and reveals her childish white underwear with hearts on it to show him that "embarrassing stuff can happen to anyone", Kimmy offers Kabir a drink to "suck on", but Kabir, misunderstanding her, attempts to flee her office, at which point she blurts out that he's fired. As a result, he files a sexual harassment complaint against Kimmy. The next day, after she sees Kabir still in the office and hears from Zach about the complaint, the other employees tell her that none of them actually like to be touched, and that after "what [she] did to Kabir", they are taking a stand against her frequent hugs and high-fives. They reveal that they warn each other of her arrival each morning so that they can hide from her, and while Kimmy initially says that they just don't like fun, she then announces that as the head of HR she will be placing herself on leave in order to investigate herself in light of Kabir's complaint.

Later, she shows Titus the file on the complaint from Kabir, and he is shocked by it. She defends herself by saying that she's not a "Weinstein or a Spacey or a the president", but Titus tells her that it doesn't matter, and that everyone has to watch their step. He says that it's not about her, but her coworkers' feelings, and it's also about him because of what happened with Mr. Frumpus. She expresses sympathy over that, and asks Titus if that's what she did. He tells her that she made all her coworkers feel scared and powerless whenever she walked into the office. This triggers a flashback to how she and the others felt in the bunker whenever they heard the Reverend coming, and realizes that if that is how her coworkers have been feeling about her, then she's been a "monster". She says she's going to stop caring about if she makes people sad by firing them, and be "Johnny Paycheck", just working for the weekend. Titus tells her that she just needs to find a way to make work fun while still respecting her coworkers' boundaries, and assures her that she can do it by reminding her of how she had learned to respect his boundaries while still having fun with him, despite having had issues with it when she first moved in.

Kimmy returns to the office and is approached by Zach, and she tells him she has found a solution: she is now imagining all of her coworkers as looking just like Titus in different outfits and wigs, which should allow her to respect their boundaries as she does Titus's.

Kimmy vs. The Reverend[]

Kimmy is three days away from her wedding to Prince Frederick, who is either 11th or 12th in line to the British throne. After a dress fitting, she discovers a choose-your-journey book tucked away inside Jan S. Port that was borrowed from a Louis Gossett Jr., Junior High School six years after she and the other mole women had been kidnapped. She calls Cyndee, who tells her to ask the Reverend about it.

The Reverend, who remains in prison, lets slip that there is another bunker in West Virginia. Kimmy and Titus deduce the bunker is in Peabody Falls. Using a clue hidden in the book, Kimmy finds the Reverend, who breaks his ankle while running from Kimmy. Kimmy threatens the Reverend with a gun she had taken from a nearby gas station but ultimately spares him. While looking for something to make a splint out of, she finds a fake tree obscuring the entrance to the second bunker. She frees her fellow mole women, returns to New York and marries Frederick. After they exchange vows, she tells him she is pregnant.

Trivia[]

  • Kimmy is mistaken for a prostitute many times throughout the series. This ongoing joke begins in Kimmy Goes on a Date! by Grant Beldon.
  • Kimmy has a fear of Velcro, which she believes stems from her fixing her Velcro shoes minutes before she was abducted by the reverend.
  • Kimmy is the second woman to be lured into the cult, the first being Cyndee.
  • Kimmy's underwear is white and has hearts on it, as seen in Kimmy Is... Little Girl, Big City!".
